Black widow spider (Latrodectus hesperus) approaches fly struggling in the black widow's web, turns to expose her spinnerettes and begins wrapping the fly, only to have it fall from the web before it can be secured in silk. Female black widows of this species have leg spans of approximately 4 cm and are distinguished by the bright red hourglass pattern on the underside of the abdomen. While probably the most feared spider, black widows are not aggressive and their bites are rarely fatal to humans.
