Whirligig beetles (Dineutus americanus), belonging to the Gyrinidae family, rest on aquatic plant as others swim by. These scavengers are usually in constant motion searching out prey items that may have fallen into the water. When alarmed, they will dive beneath the water's surface. The specimens featured here measure about 15 mm in length.
