High-speed footage of a fairy shrimp (Chirocephalus diaphanous). Fairy shrimps are tiny translucent crustaceans found worldwide in freshwater or briny pools. They swim upside-down and filter algae, bacteria, protozoa, rotifers and floating detritus from the water with their beating legs, before passing it to their mouths. They inhabit ephemeral pools, in which their eggs hatch and the larvae develop and the adults lay new eggs before the pools dry up again. Chirocephalus diaphanus is the only species of fairy shrimp native to the UK. They are classified as Vulnerable in the British Red Data Book, fully protected in the UK under Schedule 5 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, and listed as a Species of Conservation Concern under the UK Biodiversity Action Plan, although not a priority species. This specimen was found on Salisbury Plain, England. Filmed at 200 fps.
