Timelapse footage of a French bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) germinating below the soil. The bean first sprouts a young root called a radicle, which heads downwards in the direction of the pull of gravity (positive gravitropism). The young shoot, called a hypocotyl, heads upwards for the surface in the direction against gravity (negative gravitropism). See clip K003 7745 for the further development of the bean. Mastered from originals at frame size 4288x2848.
