Scanning electron microscope (SEM) view moving over the head of a honey bee (Apis mellifera). This view starts on the bee's proboscis, with which is sucks up nectar and other sweet liquids. It has a pair of mandibles above this, at the base of its head, which it used for chewing during hive construction and maintenance. The flight over its head then shows the two sensory antennae, which protrude from between two large compound eyes. The flight continues up and over to the top of the head, where the frontmost of the three simple eyes (ocelli) is seen, beneath a triangular tuft of hair.
