Composite animation of the Moon rotating, revealing the features on its so-called dark side. The dark side of the Moon receives as much sunlight as the more familiar side, and is termed dark only in the sense that it is always hidden from Earth. The Moon is tidally locked in its orbit, meaning it completes one rotation on its axis for each orbit, thus we only ever see one face. However, several spacecraft have travelled to the far side and taken numerous images. The images used in this animation were taken by the Wide Angle Camera (WAC) on the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) spacecraft.
