Timelapse footage of a display of aurora borealis. These coloured bands of light are produced when charged particles from the solar wind collide with gas molecules in the upper atmosphere, exciting them. When the molecules relax to their ground state they emit light. Aurorae occur around the poles as the charged particles are channeled to the Earth's magnetic poles by its magnetic field.
