Scanning electron microscope (SEM) view of a flight into the head of a glasswing butterfly (Greta oto). The head bears large compound eyes (one seen at left), made up of individual units called ommatidia. The head is covered in tiny scales, which are seen in the close view at the end of the clip to have a finely grooved structure. The glasswing butterfly is named as its wings are not covered in these scales, as is the case with most butterflies, instead having large transparent areas more like the wings of other insects.
