Circular polarisation, animation. Circular polarisation occurs when an electromagnetic wave, such as light, is composed of two plane waves of equal amplitude (strength) that differ in phase by 90 degrees. This causes the points of maximum magnitude of the vertical component (green) of the wave to correspond to the minimum magnitude of the horizontal component (brown).
