Animation of the structure of a molecule of phosphorus pentachloride (PCl5). This molecule has a trigonal bipyramidal geometry, with three chlorine atoms (green) forming an equatorial triangle around a central phosphorus atom (orange), with two apical chlorine atoms capping each face of the triangle. This geometry is adopted as the chlorine atoms repel each other, and are as far apart as possible. The black arcs show the angles between the atoms. See clip K004 3554 for the molecule without these angles.
