Euglena algae. Light microscope differential interference contrast (DIC) footage of Euglena sp. algae, with some moving (elongated) and others at the start of their resting stage (round). The algae contain Paramylon grains (a starch-like carbohydrate) as well as a characteristic red eyespot. Euglena is photosynthetic, using the energy of sunlight to synthesise food. The eyespot is sensitive to light, allowing it to move towards sunlight. The focus of the footage changes to show different areas of the cells. Magnification: x1000 at 10 centimetres across.
