Retrovirus infection. Light microscopy of a retrovirus infection. Retroviruses are viruses that have an RNA (ribonucleic acid) genome. They use reverse transcriptase to create a DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) copy of their genome when they infect a cell. Once an infection occurs, it persists indefinitely. The level of infection can be reduced by antiretroviral drugs.
