Timelapse footage of a halo around the sun. The sun is out of frame at upper left, and the lower right part of the halo is seen in that corner. The halo appears as a faint rainbow band, with the sky inside darker than the sky outside. It is formed by the refraction of sunlight by the countless tiny ice crystals in cirrus clouds high in the atmosphere. The halo band is seen 22 degrees away from the sun, which is a fixed distance caused by the geometry of the refracting ice crystals. Filmed in the USA on a summer afternoon.
