The stars are seen circling around Polaris (the northern pole star, just off top left) as the Earth revolves on its axis. The Devils Tower is a rock outcrop that rises nearly 400 metres above the surrounding terrain. It is thought to have formed as an igneous intrusion into sandstone rock that then eroded away.
