Procyon A main sequence star. Animation of the location in the night sky and the properties of the white F-type star Procyon A (Alpha Canis Minoris A), 11.46 light years from Earth in the constellation of Canis Minor. Procyon A is a main sequence star, 2 times the width of the Sun (over 2.7 million kilometres across) and 1.5 times the Sun's mass. Procyon A, part of a binary star system, has a white dwarf companion (Procyon B). Procyon A is around 1.7 billion years old, but is thought to be evolving into a subgiant and will expand in size in around 100 million years time. Procyon A is spectral type F5, with a luminosity class of V. It has a luminosity 6.93 times that of the Sun, and has an atmospheric temperature of 6530 Kelvin. Its spectrum has hydrogen lines and lines for ionized metals such as iron and calcium.
