Pitchblende, or uraninite, is a radioactive mineral that is an oxide of uranium, often with oxides of lead thorium and rare earth elements included. In 1898, the French scientists Marie and Pierre Curie first identified the radioactive elements radium and polonium from a sample of pitchblende.
