Decomposition of magnesium silicide in a bath of hydrochloric acid. Magnesium silicide (Mg2Si) reacts with the acid to produce silane (SiH4), the silicon equivalent of methane. Silane is far more reactive than methane, though, and instantly reacts with atmospheric oxygen, combusting with a flame and a sharp crack to form silica and water.
