Red panda (Ailurus fulgens), thermogram footage. Thermography records the temperature of surfaces by detecting long-wavelength infrared radiation. The colours show variations in temperature. The scale runs from white (warmest), through yellow, orange, red and purple to blue (coldest). The red panda is found in mountainous forests in China, north-eastern India and Nepal. It reaches a length of around 1 metre, and feeds almost exclusively on bamboo leaves. It is an accomplished climber. It is a nocturnal, solitary animal. The red panda is most often classified as a member of the raccoon family. This footage shows that the most heat (yellow-orange areas) is being radiated from the animal's eyes and feet. Fur insulates the rest of the body.
