Comet Churyumov-Gerasimenko at perihelion. Time-lapse montage of images of Comet Churyumov-Gerasimenko (67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko) just before perihelion, the comet's closest approach to the Sun. The images were obtained from the orbiting spacecraft Rosetta in August 2015. This comet is around 3.5 by 4 kilometres. The European Space Agency's Rosetta spacecraft was launched in March 2004 and entered orbit around the comet on 6 August 2014. It carried instruments and a lander to map and study the comet's surface and core. Images obtained by Rosetta's OSIRIS narrow-angle camera on 12 August 2015. For the same images in a faster time-lapse montage, see clip K005/1183.
