Common toads. Juvenile common toads (Bufo bufo) emerging from water onto leaves, as they undergo the final stage of metamorphosis from tadpole to adult. Toad eggs are laid in early summer and develop into free-swimming tadpoles. Gradually their legs and lungs develop and the gills and tails degenerate until the tadpoles leave the water as fully-formed toads. Toads are generally nocturnal, hiding during the day and emerging at dusk to feed on small invertebrates. They prefer moist conditions, and return to a pond to breed. Footage filmed in Wales, UK
