Lava erupting at night from Fogo volcano. Footage of lava erupting from a vent on Pico do Fogo, a stratovolcano on the island of Fogo in the Cape Verde Islands in the Atlantic. This early evening footage shows powerful explosive strombolian eruptions from two vents, throwing glowing lava bombs high in the air. Pico do Fogo rises to an elevation of 2829 metres, some 6000 metres high when measured from the seabed. It mostly erupts highly alkaline basaltic lavas. The magma rises from the Cape Verde mantle hotspot off the west coast of Africa. The Pico de Fogo peak is currently the highest point on the island. This footage is from the 2014 eruption, obtained in December 2014.
