Eruption shockwave at Sakurajima volcano. Close-up footage of a powerful vulcanian explosive eruption creates a visible shockwave in the water vapour clouds above the crater. The eruption produces a rising ash cloud and volcanic bombs seen flying through the air and hitting the slopes. Sakurajima (1117 metres) is a stratovolcano near the city of Kagoshima in Japan. Major historical eruptions produced large andesitic lava flows, and by 1914 the flows connected this former island to the mainland. Kagoshima, which is four kilometres to the west, frequently suffers from ashfall from the volcano. Footage obtained in February 2013.
