US Astronaut Neil Armstrong ejects from an LLRV (Lunar Landing Research Vehicle), May 1968. These vehicles were built by Bell Aerosystems in the 1960s as part of the Apollo Project to land on the moon. Known affectionately as flying bedsteads, they were vertical take-off and landing vehicles powered by a single jet engine. The vehicles allowed Apollo astronauts to train for real moon landings. On this training flight of LLRV No. 1, the helium pressurization system for the steering jets failed, leaving Armstrong unable to control the vehicle. He ejected and landed safely, and went on to be the first person to walk on the Moon the following year.
