Global chlorophyll concentration. Animation showing global oceanic chlorophyll concentrations from July 2015 to April 2016. Areas of the ocean with lower amounts of surface chlorophyll are coloured blue, areas with higher concentrations are coloured green to yellow. Seasonal variations can be seen as well as features such as the nutrient-rich Antarctic currents off Patagonia, and large algal blooms in the Pacific and Gulf of Mexico. This data is important for understanding global productivity, carbon cycling, fisheries habitats, and biochemical oceanography. Data obtained from the NASA SeaWiFS, NASA Aqua and NASA NOAA Suomi NPP satellites.
