Pennsylvania black carpenter ant Camponotus pennsylvanicus sprays a noxious chemical, intended to deter predators, from gland near end of its abdomen leaving a white blotches on indicator paper, as its legs are pinched by scientist in laboratory demo. This species also has a chemical spraying gland near the end of its abdomen. Many insects and other arthropods use a variety of chemical defences to ward off predators.
