King mealworm beetle Zophobas atratus secretes a milky chemical from its thorax as it is pinched by scientist in a laboratory demo. The chemical is noxious and is intended to deter predators like birds, reptiles and rodents. Many insects and other arthropods use a variety of chemical defences to ward off predators. This macroscopic perspective has a horizontal field of view of approximately 1 cm.
