Night-time camera trap footage of a Buton tarsier (Tarsius tarsier.) inside the hollow trunk of a strangler fig tree (Ficus sp.). The Buton tarsier is a small nocturnal arboreal primate that inhabits the rainforest on the Indonesian island of Buton, off the coast of Sulawesi. Like other tarsiers it is entirely carnivorous, feeding mainly on insects but also taking small birds, reptiles and bats. Tarsiers have enormous eyes and sensitive high-frequency hearing, which help them move and hunt at night. Tarsiers catch their prey by jumping at it and grabbing it with their hands. Tarsiers are considered haplorrhine primates, related to monkeys and apes, but are thought to diverged from the rest of that line at an early stage in its evolution. This infrared camera trap was set by Canopy Access for Operation Wallacea, in 2012.
