High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) experiment. HPLC is a method used to separate a mixture into its constituents. For mixtures consisting of components with high boiling points, gas chromatography is not applicable and HPLC is used instead. The sample is injected into the system and pumped at high pressure through a stationary phase packed or coated inside a metal column of 1 to 5 mm in diameter and up to 300 mm in length. The different components of the mixture interact different with the solid phase, passing through it at different rates. The rate at which the constituent passes through the tube can reveal something about it, and the different components are generally passed to an analyser for detailed study.
