Supersonic travel. Animation showing the bunching of sound waves behind an aircraft as it travels faster than the speed of sound. The source of the waves (the aircraft) is ahead of the waves that is is producing, causing the waves to pile up behind the aircraft. This piling up causes an area of high pressure immediately followed by an area of low pressure. When observed from the ground, this change in pressure as the aircraft passes overhead results in a sonic boom.
