Chemiluminescence. Luminol mixed with bleach. An aqueous solution of luminol (3-aminophthalhydrazide) is oxidised by a solution of sodium hypochlorite (commercial bleach) and gives out a blue glow which persists for a few seconds. Luminol is oxidised to the aminophthalate ion which is produced in an excited state and emits light as it returns to a lower energy level.
