Solar prominence. Satellite image of a prominence emerging from the surface of the Sun. Prominences are huge unstable clouds of relatively cool dense plasma suspended in the Sun's hot, thin corona. At times, they can erupt, escaping the Sun's atmosphere. This clip was assembled from extreme ultraviolet images taken by a camera onboard NASA-'s Solar Dynamics Observatory satellite on March 13, 2016.
